Introduction to skin diseases in Europe:

In Europe, almost one person in 2 suffers from a skin problem and/or disease. In 2010, skin diseases were ranked fourth in terms of the impact on the quality of life.

In fact, almost 30% of patients with skin diseases experience significant levels of distress, the main psychological problems being stress, anxiety, anger, depression, shame, social isolation and lack of self-esteem. In addition, they account for 1 third of occupational illnesses, and the cost associated with the loss of productivity of these patients amounts to 5 billion euros a year in Europe.
That's why skin diseases must be at the heart of our concerns.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic, non-contagious inflammatory skin disease that provokes thick, red, scaly patches. These can appear on any part of the body, but are most commonly seen on the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back. In France, psoriasis affects between 2% and 3% of the population. The disease most often appears between the ages of 20 and 40, but around a third of cases occur before the age of 20, including in very young children.

In most cases, it is a benign disease, although it has a major impact on quality of life. In 20% of cases, psoriasis is more serious because of extensive skin involvement or associated joint pain: this is psoriatic arthritis.

Psoriasis evolves in a chronic fashion, associating flare-ups with periods of remission (periods during which signs of the disease partially or completely disappear).
Psoriasis treatment aims to relieve symptoms, reduce inflammation and slow the excessive growth of skin cells. Treatment options may include topical creams and agents, oral or injectable medications, light therapies and more.
It's important to consult a dermatologist or healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan, as each case of psoriasis can be different and require a specific approach.

Psoriasis has a major impact on patients' quality of life, which is why MEDGEN Laboratories are committed to offering first-line therapeutic solutions.

Acne

Acne is a common skin condition. It affects around 6 million people in France. Acne generally starts at puberty, mainly due to the influence of sex hormones. It affects 80% of teenagers and young adults between the age of 12 to 20 and is severe in 15-20% of cases. What's more, adult acne, particularly in women, is becoming increasingly common (around 25% of women are affected). Acne generally manifests itself through the appearance of pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, pustules and sometimes cysts on the skin. The severity of acne can vary from one person to another, and several factors such as genetics, hormones and skin care habits can influence its appearance and severity.

It is the number one reason for consulting a dermatologist because of the psychological impact it can cause.

Acne can have a significant psychological impact on sufferers, sometimes causing embarrassment, shame or emotional distress. That's why it's essential to treat acne appropriately.

Acne treatment can include topical products (such as creams or gels), oral medication, antibiotics, hormone treatments (particularly in women), dermatological procedures and sometimes a combination of these approaches. It is advisable to consult a dermatologist for a precise diagnosis and a treatment plan tailored to each individual.

Acne is a visible, stigmatising dermatological condition which has a major impact on patients' quality of life. Our aim is to provide patients and healthcare professionals with appropriate, effective and safe solutions.

Atopic dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis, often called eczema, is a chronic, non-contagious inflammatory skin disease caused by an abnormal immune response and a defective skin barrier. It causes intense, persistent itching, redness, dryness and skin lesions.

Atopic dermatitis affects around 2 million people in France. It's the second most common skin disease, just after acne. It is particularly prevalent in people with atopy.

It develops primarily in infants and children but can persist or even appear in adolescents and adults.

Atopic dermatitis can have an impact on quality of life due to the physical discomfort and psychological effects associated with the appearance of the skin. Itching can also disrupt sleep.

Treatment for atopic dermatitis aims to relieve symptoms, reduce inflammation, and moisturise the skin. It may include the use of emollient creams or ointments, topical corticosteroids to control inflammation, and in some cases, oral or injectable medication.

It is important to consult a dermatologist, allergist or healthcare professional for a precise diagnosis and a treatment plan tailored to each individual case. It is also useful to identify and avoid specific triggers that can aggravate atopic dermatitis.

Onychomycosis

Cutaneous mycoses are superficial skin infections caused by fungi (fungal infections) that can affect feet, nails and large areas of the body. Causing considerable discomfort, they are a frequent reason for medical consultation. Fungal infections are common, affecting 9.5% of the adult population in Europe.

Onychomycosis, commonly known as nail fungus, is a fungal infection of the fingernails and toenails. They are often secondary to mycosis of the feet or hands, and mainly affect adults.
laboratoires medgen mycoses

The most common symptoms of onychomycosis are a thickening of the nail, a change in colour (usually to yellow or brown), deformation of the nail shape, and sometimes white streaks or spots.

They are generally not serious but need to be treated to heal. To prevent onychomycosis, you need to maintain good foot hygiene, keep nails trimmed short and not share personal toiletries such as nail clippers or shoes.

Onychomycosis can be treated with topical or oral antifungal medication.

Treating onychomycosis can be a slow process and generally requires perseverance.

It is important to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. It is also crucial to follow the health professional's recommendations to avoid spreading the infection.
